Open Meeting Belo Horizonte

On February 6, 2014, the curatorial team in charge of the 31st Bienal hosted an Open Meeting at the Museu Mineiro in Belo Horizonte. Under state heritage protection, the museum occupies the mansion where the Minas Senate sat back in the 19th Century. The museum was founded in 1982 to conserve document and exhibit the art of Minas Gerais.

Catastrophe orchestra: an interview with Antonio Társis

A loud crash occurs when a coal pendulum plummets onto a drum. Amid other strands of coal and drums, an orchestra of materialities takes shape in the form of sounds and panels made from recycled matchboxes. From the collision between materials and historical events emerges catástrofe orquestra #1 (Ato I) [Catastrophe Orchestra #1 (Act I)], a work by Antonio Társis created especially for the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. The work is now part of the Bienal’s traveling exhibition in Chile. Read the artist’s statement.

Living Earth: Interview with Marlene Almeida

Earth samples collected from different regions of Brazil are processed into pigments or left in their raw state in a kind of laboratory. A sculpture composed of long strips of fabric dyed with natural pigments evokes a rock or a network of trails waiting to be explored. Technique and poetics come together in Terra viva [Living Earth] by Marlene Almeida, an installation created especially for the 36th Bienal de São Paulo. The work is now part of the Bienal’s traveling exhibition in Fortaleza. Read the artist’s statement.
